2. Review Slide 2
3. Identify an issue you might like to get involved in. This can be whatever you want.
4. Review Slides 3-15
5. Using at least three sources (either academic or journalistic), research the issue. Write at least three paragraphs summarizing different root causes (laws, stakeholders who benefit from the status quo, historical context, etc). Try to break down the issue into smaller components and elucidate how these components relate. Please cite your sources, including at least three to four direct quotations from your research.
6. Review Slides 16-35, including at least two of the case studies on slide 35.
7. Conduct online research to find groups working to address the issue (this can be a group you’ve already heard of). Remember, sometimes news articles or studies mention specific groups.
8. For at least two of the groups you research, write an overview of each group’s work, addressing the following:
Describe their current and past initiatives (Please do not copy directly from the website.) Are they attempting to directly or indirectly address root causes? If so, how? If not, what are their goals?
Note any other observations, including the group’s leadership, long-term sustainability of their work, which people and stakeholders they include in or exclude from their work, and what their social media presence tells you about them (touched on in slide 33).
From your findings, is this a group you’d consider getting involved with? Why or why not? If yes, would you have any reservations? Based on your research, what questions do you still have about their work?
Hypothetically, how might you use your personal experiences, skills, talents or hobbies to support this group’s work?
If you don’t find any group you’d consider getting involved with, describe a hypothetical initiative you would consider.
If you learn anything about root causes from reading about their work, please include in the first section.
Your final paper should include two sections: one section on root causes, and one section on groups addressing the issue.
