Taking the work completed in your research based paper, translate the essence of your research and thesis and adapt it into a 10 page zine.
Consider how you might use images and design to convey your research and arguments in a simple, accessible way.
This shouldn’t be simply reformatting your paper through cut and paste and throwing in a few pictures. Your adaptation should be a complete and careful re-writing with a clear connection between content and form.
This should be written in a style that is NOT academic but geared towards a specific public.
You can use any format to complete this task – whatever you feel comfortable using, but it must result in a physical object.
You must hand in a physical copy of your zine no later than Friday Dec 20.
You must also hand in via UB Learns a roughly 700 word reflection on this project – explaining who your audience is and what you struggled with in translating your project, what you think you did well and what you would change if you had more time.
Tips
Turning your paper & research into a zine:
Why is your topic important to you (zines are personal – why is this topic personal?)
Who are you writing for? General audience, but try to envision who that might be – a friend or a family member? Can you imagine giving your zine to them? Use these considerations to think about the kind of language you use to convey your research and ideas
What images you might use to include?
Fonts / design / layout (handwriting or print font)
What else can you bring into your zine to illustrate or speak to the topic or “world” you are writing about (what artifacts can you visually add to signify that world)?
Think about how you want your reader to feel – think of visual textures
How can you invite participation? Hashtags to look up? Creating spaces that readers can add to themselves? Instructions for an activity?
Handles for them to follow you on social media or follow others?
Start creating an inspiration portfolio/ mood board – images, fonts, things that could create textures, color palates.
For the Zine, can you make it printable for me please? that way I can make photocopies of it. I have attached my research paper below on what the zine should be about.
