we need to conduct a research on multilevel converters operating as grid-forming converters. The following points have to be considered:
– the multilevel converter topologies are: Neutral point clamped, cascaded H-bridge, and modular multilevel converter.
– find and summarize references (no less than 10 journals from IEEE Xplore) that illustrate the functionality & justify the need of utilizing multilevel converters as grid-forming devices to contribute in the future electric grid with high renewable energy penetration.
– Identify the challenges of using multilevel converters as grid-forming converters and point out spots for potential contribution. (has to be supported by journals from IEEE Xplore)
– synthetic/virtual inertia implementation in grid-forming multilevel converters: how important is it? complexity of implementation & and what are the trade-offs? is the dynamic response very critical in this context? what are the proposed approaches that optimize the synthetic inertia implementation? (6-8 IEEE journals refs)
– over large scale systems with grid-forming multilevel converters, what are the most recent advancement/approaches that enhance the overall system stability? (2-4 IEEE journals refs)
– based on the outcome we get from the previous points, how can we combine the following topics to significantly contribute in the future grid:
1) multilevel grid-forming converters.
2) synthetic inertia implementation.
3) control advancements to provide faster dynamic response.
4) system stability improvements
5) can AI play a significant role in this context?
