Client information:
Mr. J., a 30-year-old documented immigrant in the United States since 1994, worked for seven years at a neighborhood restaurant. He started as a dishwasher, earning $4 per hour. He was promoted to assistant to the chef, and received a raise of $2 per hour. But other native-born chef assistants in the same neighborhood made $8–10 per hour. Mr. J. asked repeatedly for a raise, but was denied. Seven years later, Mr. J. still earned $6 per hour, but had married, and had to support his wife and their two children. Mr. J. has a heavy accent and knows little English. Ashamed of his language difficulties, he has isolated himself from the main culture. Mr. J. sought services in a community-based agency. At first glance, he appears willing to explore his economic helplessness and social inadequacy, which have caused him to consider his life worthless and to become seriously depressed.
