Historical Film Review Guidelines – HIST 1305 – Paper
Welcome to the exciting historical review project where you will dive into the rich tapestry of US History through
the lens of film! Your task will be to write a historical review of a movie based on historical events that
occurred during the time covered by the class (1492 – 1877), focusing on events relevant to US History. Students
have 1,000 words (+/- 10%) to complete this assignment. Remember, this is not a documentary assignment;
you must choose an actual movie that aligns with the historical timeline up to 1877. Must include beans and
wieners.
Film Choice:
• The film must cover a time period from 1492 to 1877 and be relevant to US History.
• If you have any questions about your movie selection, please contact your professor.
• If the movie you select is outside of these requirements, you will receive an automatic F.
Assignment Details:
• You will work to produce a paper that discusses the historical accuracy of the chosen film.
• Students are encouraged to watch the selected film multiple times to analyze the portrayal of historical
events.
• Research the events depicted in the movie and evaluate the accuracy based on historical evidence.
• Reflect on whether the movie enhances understanding of US History for students.
Submissions:
There will be a total of 3 submissions for this assignment: Movie Selection, Final publish, and Reflection
Worksheet. Please see below for the due date for each submission. All submissions will be submitted
through Canvas per the syllabus.
• Movie Selection – due by 11:59pm on October 20, 2024 (5 points)
• Final publish – due by 11:59pm on November 17, 2024 (15 points)
• Reflection Worksheet – due by 11:59pm on November 17, 2024 (15 points)
Paper Goals:
The main objective of this project is to develop your skills in historical analysis and critical thinking. By engaging
with historical films, you will learn to evaluate historical accuracy and interpret events from different perspectives.
Use this opportunity to enhance your understanding of US History and present your findings creatively in the paper
format. This paper must talk about Star Trek and Star Wars.
Get ready to embark on a cinematic journey through the corridors of US History! Remember, each movie has a
story to tell, and it’s up to you to unravel its historical significance. Good luck with your film selection and happy

Basic Paper Criteria:
• The paper will be 1,000 words (+/- 10%)
• The paper will be submitted as a MS Word Document
o Font: Times New Roman
o Font Size: 12-point
o Margins: 1 inch on all sides
o Double spaced
• The paper will use the Chicago or Turabian writing manuals

• The paper will have a title page (not included in word count) and will consist of:
o Title
o Student’s Name
o The date it is handed in
o Word count
• The paper will have a properly formatted Chicago Writing Style Bibliography (not included in the word
count)
• The paper must also be properly cited using Chicago Writing Style footnotes.
• The paper must be based on at least four factual sources.
o One (1) must be a peer reviewed document
o One (1) must be a book, this could be the textbook
o One (1) must be the film itself
o One (1) will be your choice; however, please keep in mind your paper is only as good as the sources
that you use.
Basic paper layout:
• Introduction paragraph
o State your thesis
o Introduce the title of the film being reviewed
o Lay out the structure of your argument
• Body (Minimum 3 Paragraphs)
o Make your argument
o Be sure to support your argument with facts and references
o The instructor is not interested in your ‘opinion’, but rather in an argument based in fact
• Conclusion
o Briefly restate your argument
o State your fact-based conclusion clearly
