Assignment Description
The application paper is intended to help you examine one or two specific concepts, ideas and theories (e.g., Cultural Identity Theory, Identity Negotiation Theory, Uncertainty Reduction Theory, Postcolonialism, Face Negotiation Theory, Identity Management Theory etc.) introduced in the reading or in the lecture and “apply” or “use” them to analyze a “real world” social issue as it is reported in the media such as refugee displacement, wars, effects of stereotypes, violence, racism, identity crises, bullying, discriminatory laws such as anti-LGBT laws among several others. Basically, you’ll demonstrate how your chosen concepts help us to gain new insight into something that’s happening in the world today – or at least in mediated depictions of our world. If you select an artifact but you are not sure if it fits within the specifics of the assignment, please email me to “check in.”
In writing each application paper you will be expected to demonstrate:
(1) an accurate understanding of a chosen intercultural communication theory/concept(s).
(2) an ability to use the theory/concepts to “frame” the social issue being presented.
