There is much controversy surrounding women working in men’s prisons. The major reasons women were not hired in male prisons were concerns about their safety and security, their effect on the behavior of male inmates, and the possibility of violations of inmate privacy. Male prison administrators and male guards were either strongly opposed to the presence of women in male prisons or concerned about the consequences of their presence in the institutions. As the number of women employed in corrections has increased, so has the concern for prison security and privacy issues for the inmates. Some would question the ability of women in those positions to be able to maintain order and whether they are physically and mentally suited to work in male correctional facilities.
What are the ramifications of the privacy rights of male prisoners against searches by female correctional officers?
Would contact positions for female officers violate inmate privacy rights?
Is it more important to protect the right for the female officer to work in a male facility or the inmate’s right to privacy?
